Parents reading this may still have vivid memories of having their teeth pulled when they were younger. The old string attached to the doorknob trick might have you still shuddering at the sound of a slammed door. This method is a bit old-school and is definitely not a good way to remove baby teeth. The truth is, pulling at all could cause unnecessary pain and damage to the gum area. Our pediatric dentistry experts recommend following their advice for loose baby teeth. Read ahead to learn more!
Wiggle Away!
Chances are your child will be naturally curious about the loose tooth and their mouth, and they may constantly wiggle it. This is fine! Let them wiggle their tooth, as it will loosen the tooth up in a way that is painless for them, and that avoids damage. Eventually, wiggling the tooth enough will get it to the point where it will almost just fall out. Once the tooth is on the precipice of falling out, all they’ll need to do is give it a slight twist and it should come out. If they’re scared to do it themselves, you’re welcome to help them on this part. Once the tooth is out, have them apply pressure with some clean gauze until the bleeding is done. The pediatric dentistry experts at Parkcrest recommend keeping an eye on the area for a few days after, to make sure there isn’t infection or issues.

What if My Child is Nervous?
For the first couple of baby teeth, it’s pretty normal for a child to be nervous about removing their tooth. You can comfort them by letting them know that the tooth coming out won’t hurt and that when they’re tooth comes out, it’ll make room for grown-up teeth! Show them your smile and say how they’ll be just like mom or dad when they start getting their permanent teeth. Although, the best incentive is always the tooth fairy! Let them know that once their tooth is out, they can place it under their pillow for the tooth fairy to replace with a reward the next day. Even the wariest of kids can’t help but get excited by a visit from the tooth fairy!
