Dental implants are designed to look and feel like your natural teeth and last a lifetime.
The recovery process after receiving dental implants varies from patient to patient, but many people recover from the initial procedure within 2-3 days. Generally, most patients will experience some pain, swelling, and minor bleeding until fully recovered. To ensure your teeth and jaw heal properly after surgery, Parkcrest Dental Group recommends the following tips.
Use Gauze Pads and Ice
Immediately after dental implant surgery, you may experience some bleeding and swelling. Although bleeding is typically mild, some may experience bleeding for up to 24 hours. To control bleeding, place gauze pads over the areas where bleeding occurs, replacing the pads every 30-45 minutes. As the jaw heals, swelling may occur up to 3 days after surgery. Swelling can be controlled by placing an ice pack wrapped in a towel on your jaw.

Strenuous exercise after receiving dental implants will only increase bleeding and prolong healing time, so it is vital for patients to rest after surgery. At Parkcrest Dental Group, we recommend resting in bed the day after surgery. Patients should also avoid running or heavy lifting for 2-3 days after the procedure.

Avoid Certains Foods
After receiving dental implants, your mouth will be sensitive to certain foods and beverages. To ensure the implants are not disturbed and prevent additional bleeding, avoid hot foods and liquids. Stick with soft, cold foods such as yogurt, pudding, applesauce, and ice cream for at least two days after surgery. Additionally, avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, and eating foods that may get stuck in your implants, such as popcorn. Gradually, as the pain and swelling subsides, reintroduce harder, more substantial foods to your diet.
Brush Dental Implants with Care
Just like your natural teeth, dental implants require daily brushing and flossing. Continue with your daily dental hygiene routine after surgery, but avoid directly brushing the implants for a couple of days, especially if there is bleeding. When you begin brushing the surgical site, use care and caution to avoid disturbing the sensitive areas.
