5 Common Myths About Dental Implants

If you’ve dealt with tooth loss, you’ve most likely at least heard of the option to get dental implants.  Maybe even considered it. The truth is, a lot of fiction tends to scare people away from implants, when they just might be the perfect solution.

Dental Implants are Uncomfortable

The idea of pain and discomfort keeps many from fully considering dental implants. As far as the actual procedure of installing your implants, you’ll have a local anesthetic and the option of nitrous oxide to further reduce discomfort or anxiety. For your recovery, you’ll be prescribed medicine for the pain and given care instructions. However, after you’ve healed from the procedure, your implants will feel like any other tooth.

Dental Implants are Expensive

The idea of the cost of dental implants deters many from pursuing it as a real option. While the upfront cost might be higher than you want to pay, implants are meant to last your entire life, where bridges are meant to last 7-15 years before needing to be replaced. Whether you choose bridges or dentures for their initial lower cost, the expense of replacements will add up over time. Once you consider the full picture, the sting of the one-time cost of implants isn’t so bad.

Dental Implants are Noticeable

Many are worried that dental implants will be easy to spot. Some have even seen crowns in other people’s mouths (where they saw a metal rim) and assumed that’s what a dental implant looks like. Technology has given us the ability to create teeth from porcelain for implants that match the color and translucence of your other teeth to the point that others – and maybe even you – won’t be able to tell them apart.

Dental Implants are Difficult to Care For

Much like how the appearance of  implants matches your other teeth, the care is almost identical as well. There are fictitious ideas out there that implants are high maintenance, but after recovery, your implants should be cared for like any other tooth in your mouth.

Any Dentist Can Place a Dental Implant

While this is partially true, because legally any dentist with a valid license can place your dental implants, it’s not in your best interest to bargain shop, in this instance. Not every dentist that places implants will have the necessary training in surgical implantation procedures. An oral surgeon at Parkcrest Dental Group will have the proper training and experience for a successful procedure and will have the ability to manage potential complications that come with it.
