There are lots of different reasons you might find yourself without a toothbrush. Whether you forgot to bring it on a vacation or you accidentally dropped it in the toilet, sometimes you need to improvise. Brushing your teeth is important because it removes food particles, sugars, and plaque stuck to your teeth. If your toothbrush is unavailable, there are some alternatives to brushing that can get you through until you can buy another one. Parkcrest Dental offers a few suggestions to keep your teeth clean without brushing.
Mouthwash/Water
While plain water isn’t the most effective solution, it can wash out and loosen any remaining food or sugars on your teeth.
If you have mouthwash handy, this would be a better alternative. Although mouthwash can’t take the place of brushing, most mouthwashes contain alcohol that can rid your mouth of lingering bacteria. It’ll also leave your breath smelling fresh and clean.

Chew Sugarless Gum
A minty flavor of gum can hide traces of bad breath. The more you chew gum, the more saliva your mouth produces, which helps wash away bacteria. Again, make sure the gum you choose is sugarless. Gum that contains sugar could worsen the state of your mouth, whether it tastes good or not.
Use Your Finger, A Paper Towel, Or Cloth
Although not the same as toothbrush bristles, your finger, a paper towel, or cloth will work well enough if you have nothing else. It’s not a perfect method, but it can get the job done.
- First, you’ll need to wash your hands with soap and water.
- Next, you take a paper towel and wrap it around your finger. You may need to tear it a bit to make it fit proportionally.
- Then, you’ll need to wet the paper towel wrapped around your finger under the faucet. If you have any toothpaste, this would be the time you apply it to the paper towel. Now, start brushing. The paper towel will be tough enough to remove bacteria but soft enough not to damage your enamel.
- After you’re finished brushing, rinse your mouth out with water and wash your hands again.

Eat Crunchy Vegetables
Vegetables like carrots, celery, cucumbers, and broccoli are excellent foods to eat if you lack a toothbrush. Not only do they scrape off remaining plaque, but they are good for your health and your teeth!
