Dental veneers are a cosmetic dentistry procedure that is rapidly growing in popularity. Made of thin shells of porcelain, veneers are custom-made for your teeth. Made to adhere to the surface of your teeth, they can hide chips, cracks, stains, or change the shape of your teeth. Today the Parkcrest Dental Group blog will discuss the five signs you could use veneers and help you decide if they might by the cosmetic dentistry procedure for you.

Signs You Could Use Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a viable option for a multitude of dental problems. You might be a good candidate to receive veneers if:

#1 – You have minor cosmetic imperfection with your teeth.

Veneers are most often used to conceal cracks, chips, and misshapen teeth. While other cosmetic dentistry procedures are sometimes used to treat these imperfections, veneers are the most natural looking option.

#2 – You have flaws in your teeth, but have good overall oral health.

In order to receive any cosmetic dentistry procedure, it is important that you have healthy teeth and gums. If you have poor oral health do not despair. It is possible to receive veneers after receiving general dentistry restorative work to establish a healthy base.

#3 – You have existing tooth enamel.

The way porcelain veneers adhere to your teeth is via your existing enamel. While your dentist may need to remove some enamel in order to create room for the veneers it is important that some enamel remains. Without enamel, the veneer will not have a viable bonding surface to adhere to.

#4 – You do not excessively grind your teeth or practice bad friction habits.

Porcelain is also susceptible to chipping and fractures if the patient suffers from bruxism (habitual grinding of teeth). Chewing on your nails, ice or other items can damage your veneers the same as your teeth. Make certain to kick any bad habits regarding teeth health before seeking any cosmetic dental procedure.

#5 – You maintain proper dental hygiene.

Veneers are placed on the surface of your existing teeth so it is paramount that you continue to maintain good hygiene to keep your teeth healthy. Regular brushing, flossing, and visits to your dentist are key to prolonging the life of your veneers. As with any cosmetic dentistry procedure, disregarding dental hygiene after the procedure will reduce the effective quality of the work you had done.
