Are you worried that your children’s teeth are developing incorrectly? This blog from Dr. Stuart Scott and his team from Parkcrest Dental Group details the normal developmental process of teeth and helps you determine if your child’s teeth are developing at a standard rate.
Teething Timeline
The teeth that your child will gain first are referred to as primary teeth. The teething process varies from child to child. Some babies begin teething at a few months old, while some begin at 12+ months old. This means that you shouldn’t be too worried if your five-month-old is not teething. Every child develops at a different pace. It is important to keep this in mind while viewing the teething timeline that is included below:
- Front Teeth: Your baby will gain their bottom front teeth first. Normally they will gain these teeth at around six to 10 months old. Next, your child will gain their top two front teeth. This will normally occur at between eight and 13 months.
- Central and Lateral Incisors: Between eight and 16 months, your child will most likely have developed their central incisors or the teeth that lie on either side of their two front teeth. The lower central incisors will be the first to appear, followed by the top. The teeth to the side of the central incisors are called lateral incisors and generally develop at between 13 and 19 months. The lower teeth will erupt before the upper teeth do.
- Upper and Lower Molars: These teeth are situated at the back of the mouth and normally appear at around 13 to 19 months. The second set of these teeth normally come in at around 16 to 23 months.
- Canines: The canine teeth, which are the sharp teeth located beside the lateral incisors normally appear between the ages of 16 and 23 months.
Losing Primary Teeth
Your child will begin losing their primary teeth at around six years of age or so. Although it is not uncommon for teeth to begin to fall out at around six, do not be worried if your child loses their first few teeth before or after the age of six. When your child loses their teeth, make sure that you are being supportive. Reassure them that everything is okay and that they do not need to be worried.
Permanent Teeth Timeline
Your child will begin gaining their adult teeth at between the age of six and the age of thirteen. If your child is not gaining teeth according to the timeline below, you should contact your dentist to see if your child’s teeth are coming in correctly. The following is a rough timeline of when permanent teeth typically emerge:
- First Molars- These teeth normally emerge between the ages of six and seven.
- Central and Lateral Incisors- These emerge at around six to eight years old.
- Canines– Normally canines will develop at around nine and 13.
- Molars- These teeth normally come in at between the ages of nine and thirteen.
- Wisdom Teeth- Wisdom teeth take a bit longer to come in, normally at the age of 17-21, and sometimes do not come in at all.
