What is general dentistry for my family in Springfield, Missouri?
General dentistry includes dental exams and cleaning, which we recommend every six months. Your dentist will recommend when your next appointment should be.
Dental exam. During your routine dental exam, one of our dentists will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums. The doctor looks for signs of tooth decay, misalignment, swelling of the gums, and gum disease. Your dentist may also recommend routine x-rays to see if there are any underlying issues, such as wisdom teeth impaction, abscesses, or any decay below the gum line. Our 3-D x-rays provide a clear picture of your mouth, and your dentist will go over the x-ray images with you to make sure you know exactly what’s going on in your mouth.
Dental cleaning. Before we clean your teeth, we’ll look for any surface decay or cavities. A dental hygienist will carefully scrape away any tartar or plaque build-up using a special dental scraper. Your hygienist will also clean and polish your teeth using a special instrument with a soft, rubber tip and a polishing paste. Our team will also apply a professional-strength fluoride treatment to help protect the outer layers of your teeth. We’ll also demonstrate proper flossing techniques and the best way to brush your teeth. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask our staff! We’re happy to help, and we’ll do anything we can to address your questions about dental procedures.
Fillings. Our caring, compassionate staff will make you as comfortable as possible when you need a filling. Dental fillings cover a part of your tooth after the decay is removed to strengthen it. We specialize in composite fillings. These high-tech fillings mimic the color of your teeth while providing a protective cover to try to keep tooth decay at bay.
Root canals. If you have pain from a diseased tooth, your dentist might recommend a root canal as a treatment option. Root canals occur when your dentist removes the decayed part of the tooth, applies an antibacterial medication to kill any remaining germs, and then strengthens the remaining tooth with a crown over the remaining structure. The goal here is to preserve the root of the tooth while creating an artificial tooth on top of it. Your dentist will apply a local anesthetic so you won’t feel any pain during a root canal.
Tooth extractions. Your dentist might recommend tooth extraction as a viable treatment option for you, and you might decide to have a restoration later with a dental implant, bridge, or partial dentures. The overall goal of tooth extraction is to alleviate your immediate pain when restoration isn’t the best option at the time.
What cosmetic dentistry services are available for my family or me in Springfield, Missouri?
Cosmetic dentistry involves enhancing your smile and creating a positive change to your teeth in their appearance.
Dental bridges. If you have a missing tooth, a dental bridge can help you maintain your smile. Bridges can be made of ceramics, porcelain, or gold. Think of a bridge as a way to fill out your smile with one or two teeth.
Crowns. A crown strengthens an existing tooth that is badly damaged by decay, disease, or fracture. It also covers an entire tooth rather than filling in a portion of a decayed tooth.
Dental veneers. As the name suggests, a dental veneer covers the front side of your tooth to protect it from damage or to restore the original color and shape of a particular tooth. Veneers typically go on the front teeth, and they offer the same strength and caliber as natural tooth enamel. Dental veneers are typically made of porcelain.
Dentures. Our dentists may recommend dentures to replace teeth lost because of disease, trauma, or other damage. Partial dentures replace some, not all, of your teeth. Meanwhile, complete dentures replace all of the teeth in your upper or lower jaw.
Invisalign. Rather than traditional braces, Invisalign involves transparent trays that your dentist replaces every two weeks. Our board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Steven Harrison, can help you with Invisalign if he recommends this treatment option for you.
What pediatric dentistry services are available for my family in Springfield, Missouri?
Pediatric dentistry revolves around dentistry for infants, children, and teenagers. Dr. Stuart Scott is our board-certified pediatric dentist, and he will help your kids maintain healthy smiles throughout their early years.
Baby’s dental care. You should bring your baby in for a first dental visit within the first six months of getting their first tooth. Our pediatric dentist can see how the tooth comes in and if there might be anything to keep an eye on.
Thumb sucking. A pediatric dentist will take a look at your child’s thumb sucking to see if it may become something to monitor. Thumb sucking might lead to an underbite or overbite.
Bite. As your child’s teeth develop, it’s important to know how a bite develops. Your child’s teeth must bite together properly to reduce pain and strain on the jaw muscles over time.
Alignment. When your child loses baby teeth and adult teeth come in, alignment of the new teeth is important. A pediatric dentist will let you know if any orthodontic treatment is appropriate.
What orthodontic services are available for my family in Springfield, Missouri?
Orthodontics involves the straightening of your teeth when they are misaligned, and correction of bite and alignment of jaw structures. Our orthodontist, Dr. Steven Harrison, will assess your bite and alignment of your teeth to suggest a treatment regimen.
Early orthodontic treatment for kids. Children can benefit from orthodontic treatment as early as ages 7-9. Two treatment options include helping jaws to align properly to prevent an underbite or overbite, or helping permanent teeth come in properly.
Braces. Traditional braces typically last two to three years. These metal appliances gradually straighten your teeth over time. Following your braces, you will need to wear your retainers every day as per your orthodontist’s instructions. In order to maintain your orthodontic results, it will be very important to wear your retainer as instructed.
Teenagers. Orthodontics is most recommended for teenagers once all of their adult teeth come in. Our orthodontist will assess your child’s needs and recommend a treatment. We’ll also take x-rays to see if the wisdom teeth are coming in properly because impacted wisdom teeth can affect the alignment of teeth later.
Adults. Orthodontics are for adults, too. Our orthodontist may recommend Invisalign, traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, or other treatment options to help improve your smile.
