Cosmetic Dentistry: The Composite Bonding Procedure

  • Cosmetic Dentistry, Treatment

Composite bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that can be a fast and minimally invasive solution for certain flaws in your smile. Today, Parkcrest Dental Group will discuss the composite bonding procedure. We will discuss what composite bonding is, if the procedure is right for you, and details of the treatment itself.

What Is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure where composite resin is shaped and molded on your teeth. Composite resin can be applied to fix a chipped tooth, a gap in your smile, or just to get a whiter smile. Unlike other cosmetic dentistry procedures, composite resin can be applied in a single appointment.

Is Composite Bonding Right for You?

Composite bonding is not necessarily the cosmetic dentistry procedure for everyone. If your smile is crooked as a result of misalignment this procedure won’t be beneficial to you. If your tooth chip or gap is too complex for a smile bonding procedure you may need to seek a different cosmetic dentistry procedure. For instance, veneers or orthodontic treatment may be a better treatment for you. In general cosmetic bonding is best for a person looking to correct an aesthetic defect, but otherwise has healthy teeth.

Treatment Details

The treatment begins by removing some of the surface enamel from the targeted tooth, though much less than other cosmetic dentistry procedures like veneers or crowns. Next, a bonding agent is applied to the newly exposed tooth. Once the bonding agent is applied the composite resin is applied to the tooth. After the resin has adhered to the bonding agent, your dentist will begin to shape and polish your tooth to the desired shape, before finishing the tooth with an ultraviolet curing light that causes the material to harden. Your dentist will then polish the material until it matches the sheen of the rest of the tooth surface. As this procedure requires a significant level of technique in order to get a natural shape, it is best to work with an expert like the dentists at Parkcrest Dental Group.
