Why Pediatric Dental Care Matters

Start Earlier Than You Might Think!

Many parents assume baby teeth aren’t that important because they’ll eventually fall out anyway. But those early teeth do a lot more than you’d expect.

Baby teeth help your child speak clearly, chew properly, and smile with confidence. They also hold the space in the jaw for permanent teeth. When a baby tooth is lost too early — from decay or damage — nearby teeth can drift into that space, which often leads to crowding or alignment problems down the road.

Starting dental care early also helps children build the habits and the mindset they’ll carry for life. A child who has calm, positive dental visits from a young age is much more likely to take good care of their teeth as an adult. That’s the long game, and it starts here.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dentist Visit

"My child is really anxious about going to the dentist."

You’re not alone, and neither is your child. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, especially in younger kids who don’t know what to expect. The first visit is intentionally kept short and low-pressure. Our goal isn’t to do a lot of work that day. It’s to help your child feel comfortable and leave with a smile.

Here’s What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dentist Visit:

For infants and toddlers (under 3):

Dr. Scott will take a gentle look at the gums, incoming teeth, and jaw development. He’ll check for early signs of decay and answer your questions about baby and toddler dental care, brushing, teething, and what to expect as more teeth come in. Many parents are surprised by how quick and easygoing this visit is.

For older children (3 and up):

Visits include a tooth-by-tooth exam, a gentle cleaning, and a fluoride treatment if appropriate. We also take X-rays on a schedule that makes sense for your child’s development — typically starting around ages 2 to 3 with a simple set of front-tooth images that help your child get comfortable with the process.

Throughout every visit:

We narrate what we’re doing in kid-friendly language, move at your child’s pace, and celebrate the small wins. We want leaving our office to feel like an accomplishment, not an ordeal.

Pediatric Dentistry Frequently Asked Question's

At what age should a child's first dental visit be?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by age one, or within six months of their first tooth coming in, whichever comes first. At Parkcrest Dental, Dr. Scott can see your child as early as their first tooth appears, typically between 6 and 12 months. Starting early helps establish healthy habits and catch any concerns before they develop into bigger problems.

What happens at a child's first dental appointment?

The first visit is short and gentle. Dr. Scott will examine your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw, check for any early signs of decay, and answer your questions about at-home care. For very young children, the appointment may last just 15 to 20 minutes. The main goal is to help your child feel comfortable and give you the information you need.

How often does my child need to see the pediatric dentist?

We recommend checkups and cleanings every six months for most children. Depending on your child’s oral health, Dr. Scott may suggest a different schedule. Regular visits help prevent cavities, catch problems early, and keep your child familiar and comfortable with dental care.

Do children really need dental X-rays?

Yes. X-rays help us see what’s happening between teeth and below the gumline, which a visual exam alone can’t catch. Dr. Scott typically starts with simple images of the front teeth around ages 2 to 3, then adds to that over time as your child grows. We always use the minimum number of X-rays needed, and our digital equipment keeps radiation exposure very low.

My child has a cavity. What should I do?

Call us and schedule an appointment as soon as you can. Cavities in baby teeth can progress quickly and cause pain or infection if left untreated. Dr. Scott will explain your options and walk your child through the process in a calm, step-by-step way. We treat children’s cavities regularly and know how to make it as comfortable as possible.

What if my child has a dental emergency or tooth pain?

Call our office at (417) 887-1220 right away. Parkcrest Dental handles pediatric dental emergencies and will do our best to get your child seen quickly. For after-hours emergencies, our voicemail will direct you to the appropriate resources.

How do I help a nervous child feel okay about the dentist?

Start by keeping your tone positive and matter-of-fact. Avoid using words like “hurt,” “shot,” or “scary,” even to reassure. Read books about dental visits, talk about it as a normal, healthy thing to do, and let Dr. Scott and our pediatric team take it from there. We’re experienced at working with anxious kids and will go at your child’s pace.

Does my child need dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back molars, where bacteria love to hide. Dr. Scott often recommends them as a preventive measure once your child’s permanent back teeth come in, typically around ages 6 and 12. They’re quick to apply and can significantly reduce the risk of cavities in those hard-to-clean spots.

Is Parkcrest Dental accepting new pediatric patients?

Yes! Dr. Scott is currently welcoming new patients from infancy through age 18. We also see young adults with special needs who benefit from continuing care with our pediatric team. Give us a call or request an appointment online to get started.
