Wooden toothbrush with toothpaste on the bristles

At Parkcrest Dental Group, we want you to have the best choices when it comes to your daily dental care regimen. Your options include eco-friendly and environmentally conscious dental care products. Today’s blog from Parkcrest Dental Group explains some of these items you can buy on the shelf or online from your favorite retailer.

Bamboo Toothbrushes

Bamboo is considered eco-friendly because it grows quickly and doesn’t leave as big of a carbon footprint when it’s harvested. Compared to plastic toothbrushes that require petrochemicals (oil), bamboo doesn’t cause nearly as many pollutants to go into the atmosphere. Look for bamboo toothbrushes if you want manual toothbrushes for your home. Most of these toothbrushes come in biodegradable packaging. Make sure to replace your toothbrush every three months!

Zero-Waste Fluoride Toothpaste

The difficulty with most natural toothpastes is that they lack fluoride. Some companies offer toothpaste tablets with fluoride in eco-friendly packaging. Rather than a tube, these tablets come in a bag with an aluminum foil lining and paper outside. You can separate the lining from the outer layer and recycle them both. Because these are tablets, there’s no tube to squeeze. Some outer layers are compostable, as well. Follow the directions on the packaging for best results for this dental care item. Tablets typically come in 60- or 120-count packages for a two-month supply.

Dental Floss

There are two basic types of eco-friendly dental floss: silk and bamboo. While silk isn’t necessarily eco-friendly (it’s an animal-based product), it is compostable and biodegradable compared to nylon. Bamboo floss is a plant-based product. Choose floss in recyclable packaging when shopping for dental care products.

Mouthwash

Environmentally friendly mouthwash also comes in zero-waste formats such as tablets. Look for fluoride mouthwashes flavored with essential oils rather than chemicals, such as cinnamon, spearmint, and cloves. Mouthwash doesn’t have to be traditional when it comes to your dental care routine!
