Tips for Maintaining Strong Enamel

How to Maintain Strong Enamel

Have you ever wondered why your teeth are white? The answer is because white is the color of enamel. Enamel is the outermost layer of your teeth and serves to protect them. Think of enamel as your first line of defense against acids, cavities, and other outside elements that can affect your oral health.

With this in mind, it stands to reason that you want your enamel to be healthy and strong. Especially considering the fact that enamel can’t regenerate. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to help keep your enamel strong, or at least prevent it from being weakened.

Stick to a Good Oral Health Routine

Brushing and flossing twice a day, as your dentist recommends, is the first step to preventing your enamel from eroding. Good oral health care is important!

Remember, you don’t need to brush very hard when you’re brushing your teeth. If you’re constantly brushing with unnecessary force, you can wear down your enamel over time. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and use minimal pressure when you brush your teeth. You can take it an extra step further and use toothpaste that’s designed to strengthen enamel. Ask your dentist in Springfield, MO to recommend one for you.

Avoid Staining or Sugary Food and Drinks

You’ve heard this a million times before but it’s always worth repeating. Sugary food and sugary drinks are no good for your teeth! Also, things like coffee will stain your enamel and make it less white. The more you can limit your consumption of these things, the better off your oral health will be. This especially goes for enamel. The acids created from sugar are extremely effective at breaking down enamel over time. Do your enamel a favor and skip that soda.

Eat Calcium-Rich Foods

If you want to eat something that actually helps your enamel, seek calcium-rich foods. Dairy products are particularly high in calcium. Things like milk and cheese can help provide the calcium your enamel needs to be strong. If you’re lactose intolerant there are calcium supplements you can take, too. Otherwise, you can get calcium from foods like salmon and nuts.

Visit Your Dentist in Springfield, MO

Of course, one of the best ways to make sure your enamel is healthy is to go to your regular checkups with your dentist in Springfield, MO. Schedule an appointment at Parkcrest Dental Group for a teeth cleaning and to make sure your enamel is in great condition. Our dental staff can recommend more tips to make sure your enamel stays strong and healthy.
