Multivitamins represent an excellent choice for parents who want to give their children extra nutrition beyond their food. Why are gummy vitamins bad for my child’s teeth?
Gummy vitamins are a tempting option for young children because they’re convenient, easy to chew, and touted as something nutritious for your kids. The hidden downsides are that gummy vitamins may contain sugar, and the gummy substance can stick to teeth.
There are three reasons why we suggest against giving your kids gummy vitamins to supplement their diet:
- Teeth are harder to clean because the gelatin in gummies can stick to your child’s chompers. When these pieces are stuck to the enamel, they give the sugar a chance to turn into acid which can break down enamel and cause cavities over time.
- Gummy vitamins have more sugar than harder, chewable multivitamins. Eating gummy vitamins could feed the bacteria in your child’s mouth, leading to more tooth decay. Yes, your child should brush their teeth twice a day. But sugary foods don’t help teeth.
- Kids may confuse gummy vitamins for candy. If your youngster gets a hold of these and eats too many of them, it could lead to serious health complications and constitute a health emergency.
How can I reduce tooth decay from gummy vitamins?
We highly suggest brushing your child’s teeth after eating gummy vitamins. Fit vitamins into your child’s routine just before bed when you normally brush their teeth at night.
What multivitamins are best for my child’s teeth?
Our pediatric dentist recommends chewable vitamins that break down into a powder after chewing them. Look for ones with zero sugar and no artificial sweeteners.
Multivitamins provide a great way to supplement your child’s nutrition. But they should never replace food for getting nutrients.
