Pain and discomfort is an unfortunate side effect of wisdom teeth removal. It’s not pleasant, but it’s reality. Luckily, there are various ways to manage the pain and help it subside. We can’t make the pain go away, but there are plenty of proven ways to get you through the process.
Medication
Obviously, the easiest way to keep the pain at bay is through your pain medication. After wisdom teeth removal, you’ll like be prescribed a fairly strong pain reliever, so make sure to take the pills as instructed by your dentist and by the instructions on the bottle. To prevent nausea, make sure to eat a little before taking your medicine. Speaking of food, you can minimize pain by eating food that is soft and not too hot. Also, make sure to not use straws for a while. If pain persists even with your prescription, you may be able to supplement with an over the counter pain reliever, but make sure to check with your dentist before doing this.

Use Ice
You’ll probably experience some swelling fairly soon after your procedure. This is completely normal, but it certainly doesn’t help with pain. You can manage pain relief and reduce swelling by utilizing ice and ice packs. Filling zipper bags with ice is the recommended way to apply the ice, but if that feels too cold, you can wrap a washcloth around the bag and hold that to your cheeks.
Cleanliness
Keeping the area of the wisdom teeth removal clean is essential to recovery, as well as pain relief management. Bits of food lodged in the area can cause bacteria, leading to issues in recovery and a possible need to go back and visit your dentist. You can clean the area with light brushing and warm salt water rinses. Make sure not to swish the water too hard, as the sucking effect can remove the sutures and possibly lead to dry socket. You can swish salt water around 5 or 6 times every day to ensure the area stays as clean as possible.
